November is known for many things and one such is Tourism Awareness Month. Themed, Cultural Tapestry: Investing in Our People, Enriching Our Heritage. November 1st marked the launch of the activities to commemorate the sector’s achievement. Moreover, it allows reflection and forward planning of items yet to be realized. In essence, with the agenda set, we can anticipate a calendar of well-organized events. The events are being held throughout the country at various sites that display what the tourism sector has to offer.
In attendance at the opening ceremony at the Walter Roth Museum, was the Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Oneidge Waldron. The Honorable Minister pointed out the training initiatives that are in place to improve the service in the industry. The Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) has trained 230 persons to date under the umbrella of these initiatives. This is only part of the almost 2000, persons trained in hospitality in 2023.
What is being done?
As reported by the Department of Public Information, the minister is quoted as saying “The Department of Tourism is partnering with regional bodies to develop structured and synergized approaches to tourism.”
A bit of history and culture
Acknowledging that the cultural diversity of Guyana is paramount in the month of activities. As it was related, the GTA will take the responsibility to submit a list of sites within Guyana to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). These sites will each be recognized as a World Heritage Site. Guyana is noted to have been historically influenced by the British, Dutch, French, and Spanish Cultures from Europe. At given periods, they each occupied and governed lands within the country.
The Amerindians are known as the first settlers in Guyana’s lands. They have contributed immensely to a rich heritage that marks, cuisine, dress, hunting skills, medicine, dance, unique building construction, and storytelling. Moreover, they continue to contribute to the cultural preservation of heritage and the environment. Therefore, they possess rich knowledge on Guyana’s lands and natural diversity.
The African culture and heritage is marked by years of hard labour to build Guyana through sweat and tears. Their contribution is also earmarked by wonderful folk songs, dance, dress, and arts and crafts. Delicacies such as Cookup leaves one wanting more and a stomach that will be as contented as can be. Tales of things past, both glorious and intriguing can be learned of the African cultures and stories passed down through generations. Telling stories through song and dance is very common in this culture and can be witnessed when attending ceremonies like Queh Queh (kweh-kweh).
The East Indian culture is felt in Guyanese society and has been impactful on its heritage. There are wonderful dances and exquisite dishes that take the taste buds to another level. There are festivals such as Diwali that illuminate the night sky and give a showcase of peace, calm, and beauty. Their influence through music is enduring and beloved. Clothing and textiles are brandished with mesmerizing designs.
One must mention the famous Chinese fried rice. It’s one like no other and has been a key component in the Guyanese gastronomic delights. When in Guyana you must find out about the “Paper bag Chiney”. The Chinese are known for their chain restaurants and contributions to the construction sector.
Guyanese society is mixed and all are welcomed. As such, this month is dedicated to highlight all the wonderful things that one can find while in Guyana.
Visit the majestic Kaieteur waterfalls, abandoned forts, and the beautiful flora and fauna. Take a trip to one of the many creeks and river adventures. Sleep-over at one of the resorts. Visit the blue lakes of Linden or enjoy the city life. A trip to Guyana is a trip to paradise, relaxing and captivating.
